New biography update is due
Patchy is a new artiste that
really “knows” 'The Business'. After scoring a top ten hit in
collaboration with General B for ‘The Business’, Patchy has relentlessly
pursued success by releasing a string of radio friendly tracks like ‘Hot
Love’ and ‘Real Hot Gal’.
The singer and lyricist is
one of five children of proud parents Canute Wright and Carmen Fraser who
named their first son Paul. An active child, Paul often wore out his
clothes playing with friends in the front yard. His family would repair
his clothing with patches and the appropriate nickname, Patchy, stuck. At
age 5, he asked his relatives to help him spell the words to the first
song that he had composed and then charged his relatives each time he
performed the song for them.
With his writing skills
showing up at such a tender age, it is no surprise that Patchy excelled in
Literature, English Language and comprehension in school. He bounced
around the island living with various relatives and attending a number of
schools until his high school graduation. Then he held as many as 26
different jobs before settling into a career in music. He worked as a
sound system/club disc jockey and even as a professional barber in
Curacao, Bonaire, Venezuela and his home, Jamaica.
Jammy's released his first
recording, 'Ease Off', in 1994 when Patchy worked as a studio engineer,
but he did not take music seriously until four years later when friends
such as Buccaneer encouraged him to do so. Devonte introduced him to
Shocking Vibes where he started as a writer. Patchy honed his writing
skills, participated in voice training and learned about stage
presentation and performance from stable mates before putting his voice on
tape at Shocking Vibes.
In 1999, Patchy got his first
break as a singer with 'Say No' on Shocking Vibes' Scarface rhythm. The
following year his name topped the charts with collaborator General B on
'The Business'. Since then, the he has voiced for a number of labels,
including Kings of Kings, First Name and Lion Paw who released ‘Weekend
Girl’ (his current hit), ‘Cruise Control’ and ‘Why Did You Lie’
respectively. He has also written or co-written a number of tracks for
fellow performers; ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’ performed by Kirk Davis,
‘Double Jeopardy’ performed by Tanto Metro and Devonte and ‘Nah Go Down’
performed by Elephant Man have all been well received.
Patchy continues to refine
his stage presence, even as he works to expand his catalogue. His has
performed on stages across the country, including MX3 in Negril, Damali
Beach in Montego Bay, Perto Seco Beach in Ocho Rios and the Asylum
nightclub on Kingston’s Hip Strip.
In his short career, the
young singer and writer has been exposed to and worked with many of the
industries leading professionals. With a Tameka nomination for Best New
Artiste and proven musical skills, it is doubtful that Patchy will return
to wearing patches.
